Help & guides
Everything you need to go from empty account to empty(-ish) inbox.
- Register with your name, an email address and a password. The email address is your username — it does not have to be the mailbox you plan to clean.
- Activate by email. We send a confirmation link; your account cannot sign in until you click it. Not arrived within a few minutes? Check your Junk/Spam folder — see troubleshooting.
- Enrol your authenticator (mandatory 2FA). On your first sign-in you'll be shown a QR code. Scan it with any authenticator app — Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password and similar all work — then enter the 6-digit code it shows. From then on, sign-in is password + current code.
- Save your recovery key. Your welcome email contains a 32-character recovery key. Store it somewhere safe (a password manager is ideal): it is the one way back in if you lose your authenticator device, and we cannot show it again.
From your dashboard, choose Connect Microsoft (Hotmail / Outlook.com / Live) or Connect Google (Gmail). Mailbox connection is rolling out now — if the buttons aren't live on your account yet, they are arriving shortly.
- You sign in on Microsoft's or Google's own page and approve read/modify access to your mail. MailSplat never sees your mailbox password.
- The connection is made by your browser directly to the provider — mail data does not pass through our servers.
- You can revoke the connection at any time from your Microsoft or Google account's security settings (links in troubleshooting).
Start a scan and watch it work through your mailbox: your browser reads message headers (sender, subject, date, size) through the Microsoft Graph or Gmail API and builds a picture of who is filling your inbox and with how much.
- Results are saved to your browser's own storage (IndexedDB), on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
- Large mailboxes take a while on the first pass — you can leave the tab open and come back.
- A scan is a snapshot: new mail after the scan isn't included until you rescan.
After a scan, the dashboard summarises your mailbox:
- Totals — how many messages and how much storage they occupy.
- Contacts — every sender, ranked by message count and total size. The newsletters and notification firehoses float straight to the top.
- Biggest emails — the individual messages taking the most space (usually old attachments).
The point of the dashboard is triage: it shows you where a small number of decisions ("everything from this sender can go") reclaims the most space.
Select the messages, senders or groups you want gone, then delete. Two safety rails are always on:
- Confirmation dialogs. Nothing is deleted the instant you click — a dialog always shows what is about to happen and asks you to confirm.
- Recoverable deletes. Deleted mail goes to your provider's Deleted Items (Microsoft) or Bin (Google) folder, where it can still be recovered — typically for about 30 days, on the provider's schedule.
Even so: review before confirming, especially bulk selections. Once your provider empties its bin, mail is gone for good.
Free gives you scanning, the dashboard, statistics and the full contact breakdown — everything you need to understand your mailbox.
Pro ($1.49/month, billed annually at $17.88/year) unlocks the fast clean-up tools: bulk delete, auto-select presets, and unlimited clean-up. It renews automatically and you can cancel at any time — Pro keeps working until the end of the period you've paid for. Payment is by card through Stripe's secure hosted checkout; MailSplat never sees your card details.

The activation email hasn't arrived
Check your Junk or Spam folder first — activation emails often land there on a fresh sending address. Still nothing? Use resend activation to get a fresh link.
I lost my authenticator device (2FA)
Use your 32-character recovery key on the account recovery page — it lets you reset your password and re-enrol a new authenticator. No recovery key either? Get in touch via the contact page from the email address on the account and we'll verify you manually.
Scan results look out of date
Scans are snapshots — run a rescan. Results live in your browser, so a different browser or device won't have them until it scans too.
I want to disconnect MailSplat from my mailbox
Revoke its access directly with your provider — takes effect immediately, no MailSplat involvement needed:
- Microsoft: account.live.com/consent/Manage (Apps and services)
- Google: myaccount.google.com/connections (Third-party apps & services)
To also remove scan data from your device, clear your browser's site data for MailSplat.
Didn't find it? Contact us — include what you tried and what happened, and we'll get back to you.
